Velen is one of the game's very large areas, covering a huge open landscape, numerous villages and boroughs, and also includes the fairly decently sized city of Oxenfurt.Throughout Velen, and Oxenfurt, there are numerous sellers selling very specific cards (which will be mentioned) and a large number of opportunities to play merchants and other crafters to get a card from the random card pool. Velen also offers the first Gwent specific quest, which has unique and powerful cards tied to it.Two of the merchants/crafters you can defeat in Velen are, annoyingly, not in their respective locations when the game begins, but they are marked on the map where they should be. A lot of people on the Internet freaked out about this, including myself at first, but they are both there, you must just complete a task to get them. Fear not, friend, as details will be included about each in the roadmap.Now that you are beginning the arduous task of defeating random merchants/crafters for random cards, you will notice sometimes that a person is not where they should be, even if they are marked on the in-game map, such as a blacksmith not being at his anvil. Worry not; simply meditate for a while and repeat this until they appear. Sometimes they will not talk to you, so just repeat the previously mentioned meditation method. Also ensure you are trying to talk to the correct person; sometimes a map may say a blacksmith in village X, and said village may have two blacksmiths beside each other, and only one plays Gwent.
